We are used to thinking that tongue diagram or often called tongue map is divided by the taste that tongue tastes. A later research then proved it wrong. The tongue map that we know is a kind of misconception brought by the previous research. Years later, there was a research conducted and showed that this well-known tongue diagram is a fault.
Tongue Diagram and why it is being mistaken
Once, there was a paper written by Edwin G. Boring. He was a German psychologist and the paper written was translated. It said that tongue was divided into some sections according to tastes. It was then considered as a widespread truth. People believed that tongue sections have different function to taste for each of it. Even until this day, there are some people who think that this is a trusted information.
This information believed that the base of the tongue tasted bitterness. It also said that only this region of the tongue that could taste such taste. The other part like the middle tongue can taste sourness. Edwin G. Boring considered that only this part of the tongue could taste such flavor. The next part which is in front of the previous part, it could taste saltiness. The last part that is the tip of the tongue could taste sweetness. Those are the belief which was generally thought as a truth by many people. However, the later research proved it wrong.
There is a research conducted years after the previous one. It said that a particular taste come from all parts of the tongue whether it is the base, middle, front or tip of the tongue. However, a certain part of the tongue may taste a certain flavor more sensitively. Moreover, all parts of the tongue taste the flavor but they are less sensitive. In this research, there is no certain part of the tongue labeled for a certain taste. They are all taste flavors. That is the research that now opens our eyes proving that not all information is right. We have to rethink about and recheck the information before deeply believe in it. In conclusion, by learning the misconception of the tongue diagram we are able to know that parts of the tongue can taste all flavors.
